A Life That Made a Difference
Some lives are remembered not only for the years they span, but for the people they touch, the values they uphold, and the difference they make in their communities. The life of Mr. Nkwain Bartholomew Nkwi, affectionately known as Bobe Barth, was one defined by these enduring qualities.
A dedicated educator, public servant, administrator, mentor, devoted family man, and faithful servant of the Church, Mr. Barth spent much of his life investing in others. Through his work in education, his commitment to community development, his service to the Catholic Church, and his devotion to family, he demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in humility, integrity, discipline, and a willingness to serve.
His journey reflected a deep belief in the power of education, the importance of moral character, and the responsibility each person carries to contribute positively to society. Today, his legacy continues through the values he lived by and the lives he helped shape.
Early Life and Education
Nkwain Bartholomew Nkwi was born on 29 October 1948 in Wombong, Njinikom, to Pa George Nkwi and Mama Sabina Nambang, both of blessed memory.
Raised in an environment that emphasized faith, discipline, and moral values, he developed the principles that would guide him throughout his life. His early experiences helped shape a character marked by responsibility, perseverance, and respect for others.
His formal education began at R.C.M. Fuanantui, where he studied from 1958 to 1963. He subsequently attended St. Anthony Primary School, Njinikom, from 1964 to 1965, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.
In 1965, he proceeded to Bishop Rogan College in Soppo, Buea, for his secondary education. During his time there, he distinguished himself through his leadership and sense of responsibility, serving as House Captain for most of his stay. He obtained his General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level in 1970.
His interest in education led him to St. Peter’s Teacher Training College, Bambui, where he studied from 1971 to 1973 and obtained his Teacher’s Grade II Certificate. He later attended Government Teacher Training College, Bamenda, from 1978 to 1979, earning his Teacher’s Grade I Certificate, also referred to as CAPAAEG.
These educational milestones laid the foundation for a career that would span teaching, school administration, public service, and community mentorship.
A Calling to Education
For Mr. Barth, education was more than a profession. It was a calling and an opportunity to influence lives, build character, and prepare younger generations for the future.
He began his teaching career at C.S. Mbogge Nkwi in Oku before moving to St. Anthony Catholic School in Njinikom. He later served in Baingo and at Government Primary School, Fundong, contributing to the education and development of children across the communities in which he worked.
His commitment to the teaching profession extended beyond the classroom. He understood that educators help shape not only what students know, but also the values, attitudes, and sense of responsibility they carry into adulthood.
After years of public service and upon retirement, he continued his educational mission by serving as Head Teacher of Mountain Nursery and Primary School, Fundong, for three years. In this role, he remained committed to guiding children, supporting teachers, and contributing to the development of the school.
Even after his formal career had ended, his desire to educate and mentor others remained strong. His life stood as a testament to the idea that the impact of a teacher reaches far beyond the classroom and can continue across generations.
Public Service, Administration, and Integrity
Mr. Barth’s professional journey also reflected a strong commitment to public service and responsible administration.
He served at the Inspectorate of Basic Education in Fundong before being appointed Bursar of Government High School Fundong, now Government Bilingual High School Fundong, in the early 1990s. He held this position until the early 2000s, carrying out his responsibilities with a reputation for honesty, accountability, and diligence.
The role of a bursar demands careful stewardship of resources and a high degree of trust. Through his service, he demonstrated the importance of responsibility and integrity in managing public resources and supporting the effective functioning of an educational institution.
Following his tenure as bursar, he returned to the Inspectorate of Basic Education, where he served as Chief of Bureau for General Affairs until his retirement.
Across these responsibilities, he exemplified a principle that remains relevant in every institution: leadership is not simply about holding a position; it is about fulfilling one’s responsibilities faithfully and earning the trust of others.
A Servant of Faith and the Church
Faith was a central part of Mr. Barth’s life. His service to the Catholic Church reflected his belief that faith should be expressed through action, community participation, formation, and service to others.
He was a committed supporter of the Church’s New Way of Being Church initiative and participated in the Seventh Catholic Convention in 1999. The convention contributed to the development of the Pastoral Plan document, which provided direction for pastoral life and activities within the Church.
Following the convention, Mr. Barth contributed to efforts to implement the Pastoral Plan and support the training of pastoral agents throughout Fundong. During the period when Fundong was under Njinikom Deanery, he participated in Archdiocesan Formation Pastoral initiatives.
His commitment and experience led him to serve as Coordinator of the Fundong Deanery Pastoral Formation Team (DPFT). He also coordinated activities associated with the Pastoral Planning Formation Team (PPFT) and the Missionary and Small Christian Faith Communities Formation Team (MSPFT), as described in the records of his service.
These responsibilities reflected a deep commitment to strengthening the faith community, equipping others for service, and helping translate shared beliefs into practical action.
His contribution to the Church was not merely about participation. It was about helping others grow in faith, encouraging collective responsibility, and building communities grounded in shared values.
A Passion for Football and Youth Development
Beyond education and religious service, Mr. Barth had a passion for football and the development of young people through sport.
An accomplished footballer, he pursued further training in Bamenda in the early 1980s, where he qualified as a football coach and referee.
His involvement in football provided another avenue for mentorship. Sport offered opportunities to cultivate discipline, teamwork, respect, perseverance, and leadership, qualities that were consistent with the principles he upheld throughout his life.
Through his interest in the game and his engagement with young athletes, he demonstrated that personal development can take place in many settings. The lessons learned on the football field, like those learned in a classroom, can help prepare young people to become responsible and constructive members of society.
Family, Unity, and Community
In 1981, Mr. Barth married Mrs. Stella Mbu. Together, they raised five children, three sons and two daughters, building a family grounded in the values that shaped his own life.
He was deeply committed to family unity and understood the importance of maintaining relationships across generations. One of his notable contributions was his effort to trace and reconnect distant relatives, strengthening family bonds and helping restore connections that might otherwise have faded with time.
This commitment to unity extended beyond his immediate household. His life reflected an appreciation for belonging, shared responsibility, and the importance of preserving relationships within families and communities.
Whether through his professional work, Church activities, mentorship, or family relationships, he consistently demonstrated that a meaningful life is enriched by the connections we build and the care we show to others.

The Bartholomew Nkwi Legacy Scholarship
The life of Mr. Bartholomew Nkwi offers a powerful reminder that education can be one of the most lasting ways to invest in humanity. A teacher helps students acquire knowledge, but also helps them recognize their potential and imagine possibilities beyond their present circumstances.
Inspired by this legacy, Sovate Institute of Technology established The Bartholomew Nkwi Legacy Scholarship to honor his life and carry forward the values he represented.
With the guiding message “Empowering Minds. Transforming Lives,” the scholarship seeks to support deserving Cameroonian students pursuing Higher National Diploma (HND) studies at Sovate Institute of Technology.

Programme
The initiative aims to support five students each academic year, with scholarship assistance valued at 350,000 FCFA per recipient, subject to the program’s eligibility requirements, available funding, and final award terms.
The scholarship recognizes that potential is not measured by academic results alone. Financial circumstances, perseverance, integrity, commitment to learning, leadership, and the desire to contribute positively to one’s community are also important considerations.
In this way, the scholarship seeks to transform a personal legacy into a continuing investment in young people and the future they can help build.
It is a tribute to a man who devoted his life to education and service, and an opportunity for future generations to carry those values forward.
A Legacy Beyond a Lifetime
The true measure of a life is often found in what continues after the person is gone: the lessons remembered, the relationships strengthened, the people inspired, and the opportunities created for others.
Mr. Bartholomew Nkwi’s journey touched many dimensions of life, education, public service, faith, sport, family, and community. Across these areas, he demonstrated that a lasting contribution does not depend solely on recognition or status, but on the commitment to serve faithfully and make a positive difference.
Through the scholarship established in his honor, his story becomes part of a continuing journey. Each student supported represents an opportunity to extend the values of learning, integrity, perseverance, and service into another life and, potentially, into another generation.
His legacy is therefore not confined to memories of the past. It lives on in the opportunities made possible, the values passed forward, and the people inspired to serve others.
May his life continue to inspire us to educate with purpose, lead with integrity, serve with humility, and create opportunities for those who will shape the future.
In honor of Mr. Nkwain Bartholomew Nkwi, affectionately remembered as Bobe Barth.
